Empowering U training course has been a gentle journey of exploring what concepts of mental health and resilience mean for each of us and how we can enhance them in our work with young people. The training was an initiative of Eolas Soileir and took place in a beautiful centre build by the organizers themselves in Clonmines(Wellington Bridge), Co.Wexford, Ireland, a remote rural location situated near the sea. The location was isolated from any city, shops, pubs or any other amenities and this gave a particular flavour to the training. It offered us a space to withdraw from the outer world for a while and look deeper into our inner world. It also created a space for sharing our stories and creating nice memories with all the people who were there. We gathered more than 20 youth workers, trainers, youth leaders from different countries of Europe (Greece, Ireland, Serbia, Armenia, Belarus, Spain, Romania, Slovenia, Poland, Estonia) and brought in our experiences, ideas and competences to the training.
The program offered us the opportunity to meet professionals from the field of youth work, mental health, education or drama who together built a learning and sharing environment during the week we spent together. They facilitated workshops on mindfulness, creativity and arts, drama and natural care skin products. Their approach was very simple, kind and open and guided us in exploring the themes and concepts of the training. Each of the activities were accompanied by a time for reflection which gave us opportunity to not only think about the learning points we take out of the activities, but most importantly, how are we going to use them and introduce them in our practice, at professional and personal level. I am not going to get deeper in describing each method, as they will be published later by the organizers, but I am going to emphasize the fact that the simplicity of the methods and the kindness of the approach were some of the points that I will take with me from this experience. It was a reminder that you build your well being with small acts of kindness for yourself and the others. This is a constant process and one result of it is that you are going to reach a more empowered version of yourself.
